Absalom Wins the Hearts of Israel

Absalom, dressed as a royal prince, warmly takes a man by the face in the busy public way near the city gate. Around them are travelers, servants, goats, a camel, market tents, and onlookers, placing the moment in the daily life of Jerusalem where disputes and petitions were brought before the king. The scene portrays Absalom’s calculated charm as he greets the people personally, embraces them, and presents himself as the ruler who would give them justice. In 2 Samuel 15, this outward affection becomes a political snare: Absalom “stole the hearts of the men of Israel” by using kindness, access, and flattery to undermine King David.
